Berry Street Education Model
The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) is an educational framework developed by Berry Street, an Australian organisation focused on supporting children and young people who have experienced trauma, disadvantage, or complex challenges.
BSEM is a trauma-informed approach that helps educators support students affected by trauma and adversity. It focuses on building trust and emotional regulation (attachment and self-regulation), creating stable and predictable routines, setting clear and achievable expectations, fostering positive relationships between teachers and students, using engaging and meaningful teaching methods, and encouraging teachers to reflect on their practice to continually improve support for students.
The BSEM is widely used in schools, especially those working with vulnerable or at-risk students, to improve educational outcomes by addressing the underlying emotional and social needs alongside academic teaching.
At Nemarluk School we support students to regulate their bodies for learning, create positive relationships and work to provide engaging individual learning experiences and programs for our students using the Berry Street Education Model framework.
